According to what you describe, I think your change is fine and shouldn't lead to any error. Can you paste the full screen output of the building of the Chinese page after you have made the change to Make.lang? Since I don't have access to a PPC machine that has wml installed, I can't test it out myself. And on a related note, can you try changing the B5TOGB value to the following and tell us the result: B5TOGB = /usr/bin/iconv -f big5 -t gb2312 Because iconv is standard (in libc6) and so should lead to fewer cross-platform issues.
