severity 100148 wishlist thanks I just noticed that we would lose the nice ability to easily count how many people switch to a different mirror if we moved to a system that doesn't include invoking the CGI. So, since there are two cons to implementing this after all (the other being the increase in file sizes), I'm marking this bug as wishlist instead of minor.
