You may find it convenient to use apt to get the latest security updates. This requires a line such as deb http://security.debian.org/ stable updates in your /etc/apt/sources.list file. I wanted to get security updates for my potato machine, so I made the obvious change to that line -- I tried http://security.debian.org/ potato updates However, that didn't work; here's what I saw: 07:56:02 [EMAIL PROTECTED] offby1]# apt-get update Err http://security.debian.org potato/updates Packages 404 Not Found Hit http://non-us.debian.org potato/non-US/main Packages Hit http://non-us.debian.org potato/non-US/main Release Hit http://non-us.debian.org potato/non-US/contrib Packages Hit http://non-us.debian.org potato/non-US/contrib Release Hit http://non-us.debian.org potato/non-US/non-free Packages Hit http://non-us.debian.org potato/non-US/non-free Release Hit http://non-us.debian.org potato/non-US/main Sources Hit http://non-us.debian.org potato/non-US/main Release Hit http://non-us.debian.org potato/non-US/contrib Sources Hit http://non-us.debian.org potato/non-US/contrib Release Hit http://non-us.debian.org potato/non-US/non-free Sources Hit http://non-us.debian.org potato/non-US/non-free Release Ign http://security.debian.org potato/updates Release Hit http://http.us.debian.org potato/contrib Packages Hit http://http.us.debian.org potato/contrib Release Hit http://http.us.debian.org potato/non-free Packages Hit http://http.us.debian.org potato/non-free Release Hit http://http.us.debian.org potato/main Sources Ign http://http.us.debian.org potato/main Release Hit http://http.us.debian.org potato/contrib Sources Ign http://http.us.debian.org potato/contrib Release Hit http://http.us.debian.org potato/non-free Sources Ign http://http.us.debian.org potato/non-free Release Failed to fetch http://security.debian.org/dists/potato/updates/binary-i386/Packages 404 Not Found Reading Package Lists... Through trial and error, I determined that the correct line is deb http://security.debian.org/ potato updates/contrib updates/main updates/non-free Perhaps this means that the text on http://www.debian.org/security/ is incorrect; or perhaps it means that the updates for potato are in the wrong place. But in any case, I shouldn't have had to experiment as I did in order to determine the correct line for /etc/apt/sources.list; I should have been able to copy the correct line directly from the text on http://www.debian.org/security/. -- System Information Debian Release: 2.2 Architecture: i386 Kernel: Linux potato 2.2.14 #1 Tue Apr 25 10:11:42 EST 2000 i686
