I agree with the static site generator idea. I just started blogging using Jekyll (see my site at http://rmorabia.com, and my commentary on this change at http://rmorabia.com/redesign).
It's simple, and you can get free hosting with Github. You can also opt for a Github domain, so your website would be [domain].github.io.
