Hi Just a quick note to introduce myself. I'm not new to open source software but am to open source operating systems having only had a brief encounter two years ago as part of my degree course.
I'm now persuing a research masters and will be comparing two transport layer protocols (SCTP and DCCP) which will require some network emulation. As the open source community are the only people putting together implementations of these new protocols (that I can get access to) it looks like I'll finally have the opportunity to get more familiar with an open source o/s! I've been looking at Debian as information so far indicates that it may include support for these two protocols, I've actually posted to the Debian-Kernel list to try and confirm the current status of support. See http://lists.debian.org/debian-kernel/2007/11/msg00519.html for that post. I don't actually feel well enough qualified to contribute much to the community at the moment but if anyone can point me in a direction where technical knowledge is not a must have I would love to start getting more involved. Unfortunately I don't think I'll ever be running a pure open source system (well not unless EA games start releasing games that will run on Linux and my educational establishment stops expecting presentations and docs in you know whose's office suite formats) but I definitely aim to go dual o/s in the very near future. Anyway, a big thanks to all in the open source community for being out there and doing what you are doing. It helps to restore some faith to look at the open source community and what it aims for when the over-commercialisation of the world (especially this time of year) is everywhere around.
