Hi, I use pcsc-omnikey. When I had smartcard with 1024 bit cert, ccid worked for me, but when my CA upgrade certs to 2048 bits, ccid stopped to work. I had to switch to pcsc-omnikey, which works. So they call "secure mode" 2048 bit operations.
