It will be the replacement for libgmail: not all libgmail developers out there want to rewrite their programs from scratch, so a new, backward-compatible libgmail based on IMAP does make sense IMHO. I'm cc-ing the author of both the older libgmail, and the new IMAP-based one, in case he wants to chime in.
