It provides sophisiticated stateful filtering, which is more intelligent than netfilter, but lacks some of the other functions. ipfilter's main strength is that it is portable across many UNIX and UNIX-like systems. Thus you can use ipfilters on your Solaris, Net/Free/OpenBSD, IRIX, HPUX and Linux boxen. It is also installed as the default firewall on some of these systems. Unfortunately, it does require a kernel module to function.
