It's a good idea to provide a shared library while upstream doesn't, but
you should also be careful. Especially, you shouldn't forget to bump the
SONAME by yourself whenever the ABI is changed in a
backwards-incompatible way. If you feel it's going to change too often,
you should have a look at libtool's -release option.

In all cases, don't hesitate to ask me for help about shared libraries.
I'm not really an expert, but I had to deal with several awful libraries
in Debian.
