It drops in alongside a preexisting MTA such as Exim, Postfix or qmail, acting as their inbound SMTP interface to the outside world while adding many anti-spam features. It can easily be altered or enhanced through a plugin interface which enables fine-grained control over the SMTP transaction. . The goal of qpsmtpd's design is wherever possible to reject spam and virus-infected mail during the SMTP transaction itself, rather than after acceptance, which can help reduce the storage and overhead costs of bouncing.
