Hi all!
I think having the original markdown implementation in Debian is a good
thing, for historical reference and for compatibility - there's people
still using this package (I myself use this quite often when wanting to
check for correctness of my markdown files).
I worked a bit on modernizing packaging, and attached you can find
three patches which contain all my changes. Since I'm a DM, somebody
would need to either add me to the DM acl of this package or to sponsor
my upload. In any case, I've pushed my update to Mentors too:

Chris, I noticed you've asked for removal of the markdown package. As
you might guess, I disagree with its removal, and with my adoption I'm
already fixing the Serious bug preventing the package to migrate to
testing. Is it possible to stop the RM procedure?
