I have read the "Debian New Maintainers' Guide" if that's what you mean, and a few others. As for your second question: auctex is an essential tool that I use on a daily basis, and I have been maintaining my own package (auctex v12) for a few years now for my personal use. So the answer is yes in any case (unless Davide starts maintaining it again), the only question is whether or not I share the result. Cheers, Itaï.
