It was the first of its kind and opened the door to computer-aided engineering. Subsections of a design can be modeled and then larger groupings of these elements can again be modeled. NASTRAN can handle elastic stability analysis, complex eigenvalues for vibration and dynamic stability analysis, dynamic response for transient and steady state loads, and random excitation, and static response to concentrated and distributed loads, thermal expansion, and enforced deformations. This package allows engineers to access a de-facto standard FEA engine. It contains 164 tests with reference data (all passing https://travis-ci.org/ldallolio/NASTRAN-95). We use it to test converters to and from the NASTRAN syntax. Similar projects are code-aster, calculix-ccx, elmer but they are different in many aspects: - the NASTRAN input syntax and output formats make it compatible with some important commercial products - it contains original algorithms - it is really fast and portable (it can run over android out-of-the box) - zero library dependencies - it is developed to have a really, really small memory footprint A small but active supporting group is actually working at it, there is a discussion group at https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/nastran, but co-maintainers and sponsoring are very welcome and would certainly help.
