OpenLayers implements a JavaScript API for building rich web-based geographic applications, similar to the Google Maps and MSN Virtual Earth APIs. This package contains OpenLayers 3 (OL3), a fundamental redesign of the OpenLayers web mapping library. Version 2 is widely used, but dates from the early days of Javascript development, and is increasingly showing its age. OL3 has been rewritten from the ground up to use modern design patterns. The openlayers3 package will be maintained within the Debian GIS team. Many of the OpenLayers 3 Node.js dependencies that are not yet packaged in Debian are probably best maintained by the Debian JavaScript Maintainers.
