Package: wnpp Version: N/A; reported 2002-08-06 Severity: wishlist * Package name : fft Version : 1.99-beta6 Upstream Author : Nils McCarthy <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> * URL : http://www.mainnerve.com/fft/ * License : Simple, permissive, non-copyleft; BSD-ish [1] Description : The alternative traceroute tool for network (reverse) engineers
FFT is a sort of 'traceroute' that often works much faster (than the commonly-used Van Jacobson method) and goes through many configurations of packet-filter based firewalls. It also has numerous other options including AS number lookups, netblock name lookups, et al. Rather than launching UDP probes in an attempt to elicit ICMP TIME_EXCEEDED, FFT accomplishes substantively the same effect using TCP SYN or FIN probes, listening for both TIME_EXCEEDED messages or TCP_RST from firewalls or other gateways in the path. FFT performs a function similar to that of the tcptraceroute package but has different features. The output is quite different from traceroute but has abilities which tcptraceroute lacks.
