I guess this is sort of on hold for the moment; the build system requires some convincing to use dependencies from their Debian packages rather than the embedded copies and I haven't had a chance to work on this again. I'd like to eventually close this bug, but in the meantime this probably shouldn't discourage anyone with more time to spend on the matter from picking it up.
