I had authored another package with neighbouring intentions: http://packages.debian.org/wheezy/uicilibris Its main feature is to create a book from one mediawiki page gathering wikilinks to other pages in a sequence. There is a plugin system which allows one to develop some snippets of code to translate mediawiki models into LaTeX macros which provide a more specific layout.
