Currently the only way freebsd really supports firmware loading is through kernel modules. SO the current idea is more like bundling some of these firmware modules in a package and build them separately from the ``normal'' freebsd tree. If we get real firmware loading into the FreeBSD kernel the linux firmware files might become usefull but this seems to be a OK solution to get hardware running.
