DBAN is a well-known live image to wipe HDDs so that you can give the hardware to others without them getting access to your old data. Apparently the "active ingredient" of DBAN is dwipe, which is forked into a stand-alone package called nwipe. Having nwipe available in a Debian Live CD would avoid having to carry around a separate DBAN CD.
