It must be compressed anyhow as this is required by dpkg-source. Maybe the upstream should be notified about this to avoid the same issue for the next release. Then, I will compress it and upload it as it is. Thanks for your quick reply ;-). FYI, in most cases, you should not repackage the upstream tarball[0] and thanks to 3.0 (quilt) format, this is not needed to do so even when the upstream provides a debian/ directory.
