I'm considering packaging dpmaster, to go with Debian's Quake 1 and Quake 3
engines. I'd maintain this package within the Debian Games Team.

If considered useful, I might also run an instance of it as an unofficial
Debian service (by pointing dpmaster.debian.net at my own server), and
configure Debian's darkplaces and ioquake3 engines to use that service in
parallel with the upstream-recommended defaults (they can use any number
of master servers, and will take the union of the results).

Description : master server (public server list) for Quake-related games

Quake III Arena, and many similar games, discover public servers by sending
a query to one or more "master servers", which lists all servers that have been
configured to send a "heartbeat" to that same master server.

dpmaster is a lightweight master server implementation, written from scratch
for DarkPlaces. It uses an open protocol based on the one from Quake III
Arena, in which new games can advertise themselves on an existing master
server without changes to the master server.

Games natively supporting the DarkPlaces master server protocol include those
derived from DarkPlaces (including Nexuiz, Xonotic and Transfusion), QFusion
(including Warsow), FTE QuakeWorld, and recent versions of ioQuake3.

In addition to its own protocol, dpmaster also supports the master protocols
used by Quake III Arena, Return to Castle Wolfenstein, and Wolfenstein:
Enemy Territory. Standalone games using the Quake III Arena engine, such as
OpenArena, World of Padman, Smokin' Guns and Urban Terror, are also supported.
