I'm back to work on this, and the packaging is nearly finished, but it
looks like there's a problem during make check:

  FAIL: gc.test: gc: Unused modules are removed

I believe this used to be a problem with 1.8 on Sparc
(http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=460617), but now it's
happening on i686.
