sorry for the late response.
I would love for it to be non-native, but the only way I have been able
to do that is by following the workaround at the bottom of bug 580804:

I'm not a Debian expert though, so it could just be me doing it wrong.

Yes, I'd be interested to hear comments on the I2P package.

I find Git more irritating than Monotone, but that's just me...
