pv is indeed similar, and has many features pipemeter does not. Pipemeter does have higher performance in every instance I've tried, and uses slightly less RAM. They're both doing mostly the same thing, but in somewhat different ways. Pipemeter was originally written to provide very little functionality, with very little interference.
