Wow, I'm flattered :) If for any reason you didn't look at the README yet,
please do so, I have tried to describe lbzip2's design in it.
In the source you'll see longish "proofs" of under what circumstances to
signal / broadcast condition variables. I have tried to describe the
underlying "theory" here, with some lbzip2 specific comments at the end:

I experimented a little bit with lbzip2 and pv and it works fine. So, I
guess that there are no problems with the delegation that task to
another tool.
