Package: wnpp The djvu compressed image file format is an enormous leap over JPEG and GIF in all ways: flexibility, compression ratio, rendering speed, incremental zooming, multipage, textual search when appropriate, etc. See http://www.djvu.att.com/ for details.
They have released a Netscape plugin, but with a horrible license. However, in a few weeks they will apparently be releasing a new version of the plugin under the GPL, to accompany the core djvu library which they've already released under the GPL. Unless someone else wants to (PLEASE PLEASE!) I'll plan to package the djvu Netscape plugin. Hopefully it will use the GPLed djvu core library, which I'll put in a separate package in the usual fashion. I haven't really looked at the compressor code, but if it is licensed reasonably I'll package it as well. I do know that they have postscript->djvu converters as well as bitmap->djvu. A compression plugin for scanners like SANE would make a great deal of sense, as would something that makes djvu files work directly with the print system.
