Dear Debian friends,
I am not a (registered) part of the team, so I can't vote for the proposal
in https://lists.debian.org/debian-vote/2014/10/msg00001.html
But, I'm an user with ~15 computers at the university and home, running 80%
of them some Debian derivative (SolydXK, MiniNo, Ubuntu, Xubuntu). And more
important than that, I am a GNU/Linux fan, enthusiast and promoter. I have
brought a lot of people to GNU/Linux arguing is safer, free and respect our
freedom.
Well, thanks to *the market wishes* of Red Hat, that pushed their systemd
stuff into us, we are now limited not only in init systems inside the
Debian ecosystem, but in a lot of things that not-init-system-only daemon
is eating.
People using it seem *superficially* happy, except system administrators
and freedom fighters. The choices are narrowing down. The whole security
and stability could be damaged with time (if this part is broken or
corrupted, how is our system to behave?).
I hear and read a lot of much more experienced users and IT people arguing
that this is going to become worst.
Debian is a big boy in GNU/Linux, not a sheep! Will it just follow wherever
Red Hat decides to take things - on containers, virtualisation, etc.!!??
Ubuntu's Upstart was not well received by Debian. SysVinit it was said to
be archaic and "one man", not worth reinforcing. I humbly think this was
not good and, yet, there are other options (OpenRC by Gentoo...!? whatever).
Please, Debian, keep being THE GNU/Linux free and libre distribution. It is
not about making a war on RH. Let them be what they want. It is about
joining forces with other distros that are not selfish as RH is being.
Debian + Ubuntu +Mint = 80% of the GNU/Linux users on this planet!
