kernel source

Hello I am looking for linux kernel source any version I am not sure what the magic words are, but from what I have been able to gather it is the source trees. I have seen the free dos kernel source for the command shell  command.com  io.sys  dos.sys, but I am not sure if linux is the same. I am reasonably certain it is not I could be wrong. I am new to programing and am doing a sort of study on kernel source characteristics for different operating systems in the hope to develop my own  Os any help would be appreciated                                                                                                         zbenjudah
