was trying to say you need about 1" of air ABOVE the fan in that
pics, opposite the heatsink 

nothing should be adjacent to the fan blocking its air flow

other kind of disk coolers, like in the url ..  the fan does NOT
stick out of the heatsink ... and is about 10mm thick ( 0.5" )
and about 1/2 - 3/4 the thickness of the 1" thick disk drives

the air flow should be cooling the electronics ... too ..
not just the body of the drive
        - fan in front of the disk shooting the length of
        the disks is best like when its those disk drive bays
