I think it has to do with the NFS implementation in Linux. I remember running similar problem when I tried to copy a couple of 100+ Mb MPEG file from one Linux system to another over NFS.
Try increasing the wsize and rsize in the mount options. That might help. Otherwise, I would suggest to try using something like rsync. -- John L.
