Thanx both for your suggestions. Leandro, exactly where do you get your j2re? j2re1.3 Depends j2se-common (>1) I have in my sources.list: deb ftp://metalab.unc.edu/pub/linux/devel/lang/java/blackdown.org/debian woody non-free But there is no j2se .deb package there. When browsing through the site I do see j2se tar files, but no .deb - so apt can never be satisfied to install j2re1.3 I found another site (http://jopa.studentenweb.org/debian/) which has a newer j2re1.4 as well as a j2se .deb . However that depends on the latest version of libstdc++5 and lots of things that go with it. I am reluctant to upgrade the core stuff to a more unstable version. I am surprised all that is required - why do we need C++ to run Java? esp. since the previous version 1.3 didn't. Anyway, where can I get a complete consistent set of .deb packages for Java? -- #>!$!%(@^%#%*(&([EMAIL PROTECTED]@^$##*#@&(%)@**$!(&!^(#((#&%!)%*@)(&$($$%(@#)&*!^$)[EMAIL PROTECTED]@) Tom "thriving on chaos" Peters
