Thanks a lot! That indeed helps! For further reference, here is the relevant 
part from my /etc/hdparm.conf:

/dev/hda {
        io32_support = 1
        mult_sect_io = 16
        dma = on
        interrupt_unmask = on
        transfer_mode = 67
}
