I didn't kept a record of what was upgraded (overconfidance) so i really don't know if mailgraph was upgraded. I did remove and installed again the mailgraph package (from testing) and got the same result. Couldn't find bugs against the mailgraph package that would relate to this problem but i there is bug# 231215 which says that changing the images to gif instead of png solved a zero size image file problem.
