In honor of Andreas, The Mighty One (tm), I here on say that this is 
closed, because my problem has been fixed.

Use 'dpkg-reconfigure locales' to generate the en_US.UTF-8 locale.

Was succesful in fixing my error, thank you Colin Watson.

And thank you Andreas for just being alive (dripping with playful sarcasm)!
