I don't get anything mounted - only the empty directory. I can do the mounting manually without any problems.

I've not used 2.6 series kernels yet, but, assuming it is the same as 2.4 series do you have the autofs module loaded or compiled into
the kernel? Can you automount anything else? Is there anything
useful in the /var/log logfiles?
