Latest Kernel Supporting iMac?

I'm considering moving from YDL -- great Mac hardware support, 
dinosaur-like update schedule -- to Debian. Questions --

What is the latest kernel that supports iMac hardware?
Is it best to download and burn a Debian ppc distro or use the 
net-install? Thanks.
