It sounds like there is a problem with your latex installation. Is the document in english (english letters that is)? Try getting a true latex file and see how it works. You can also convert to html, open in mozilla and print to postscript file. One problem you can have with corrupt postscript (and probably pdf) is with no english text where the encoding and the font aren't encoded properly into the file.
