I have only this one message of this thread but going to a console and back
to X sounds like the mouse problem I have. Switch from one computer to
another and back and the mouse screws up in X. Go from X to console and
back to X and mouse is fine--until you get to kernel 2.6.2

Now, there is no solving the mouse problem. I simply have to reboot. So,
be careful. Going from X to console and back to X works on kernel 2.4.18
but once you go to kernel 2.6.2 the mouse problem won't go away.

Oh, Man, what an annoying problem. But there appears to be a trivial
workaround if you're not picky. Just switch to a virtual terminal and back
to X. So, typically, you could Ctrl-Alt-F1 then Alt-F7 back to you GUI.
Then it works fine, at least on this machine. Good luck.
