If you look at the archive, you will find several threads detailing 
similar/identical issues here in the last few days/weeks.

As an alternative, if you are in a hurry, and not too wedded to a 
particular way of doing it the easy way out is either Knoppix or Mepis.
They are both versions of Debian testing/unstable that run from the CD 
and can be installed onto hard drive.  (there are others too).  They 
both have a reputation for accurately detecting hardware and producing 
a working system auto-magically.  I have used both successfully.
