I had this once. All files in ~user were owned by root so .Xauthority
etc. couldn't be created. Probably not your problem however.
Check your log files. Look under
/var/log/{kdm,gdm,xdm,messages,XFree86}.log. The answer is probably
there. 'startx 2>&1 | less' is also quite useful.
