It's easy to track woody because woody never gets updated. You only get minor security updates. Then in a long time Sarge will come around and you'll have to upgrade every single package on your computer (or close to it). And that's when I've encountered breakage in the past. I started out with potato and upgraded it to Woody, there were a few hitches but I managed to get things working ok. Nowadays I track unstable and have no problems. I feel that I'd rather have knoppix and not update it (if it were too difficult), than have stable and update it (but have it not change anyways).
