The lftp in stable is somewhat crippeled regarding https.
if you add something like this in sources.list:
deb-src http://non-us.debian.org/debian-non-US unstable/non-US main 
contrib non-free
you can install package with:
apt-get source -b lftp
this will download from unstable and build a .deb package.
