Have you tried another USB port, another machine?
I have a E-Ink reader that requires real USB host to start charging (no
helper application is necessary though). With one laptop charging is
unreliable, it may fall into reset cycles instead. I have not tried to
debug the issue, for some time I blamed cables or connectors.
