I had a similar issue when playing videos through VLC. The sound was choppy/laggy. As workaround I fixed it, with switching the audio output module in VLC to ALSA and selected my external device (Focusrite Scarlett 8i6) manually. It's an Pulsaudio issue. IMHO, the combination from professional sound cards (external or internal) with Pulsaudio is currently very bad. In the past installations (other GNU/Linux distributions) my first step with the new system was always to disable Pulsaudio, in addition you don't have troubles (lags an others) with JACK if you use DAW software.
