Are you getting the blank screen after you login or are you not getting a
login screen at all?

If you are not getting a login screen at all, then it is likely a GDM issue.

If you are getting a login screen and then getting the black screen after
trying to login then it is also likely a GDM issue. Do you have a mouse
pointer?

Try booting into GNOME and see what happens.

Also try switching vitrual consoles, control + Alt + F4 If you get a login
prompt login and then run `startx` to launch a X-11 session.
