Sure thing dma was off, I turned it on on both drives. The output is below. It is still slow, don't really see any change in speed. Below is also the output of "top". -- Grüssle /dev/hda: multcount = 16 (on) IO_support = 1 (32-bit) unmaskirq = 1 (on) using_dma = 1 (on) keepsettings = 0 (off) readonly = 0 (off) readahead = 8 (on) geometry = 2498/255/63, sectors = 40132503, start = 0 Timing buffer-cache reads: 172 MB in 2.00 seconds = 86.00 MB/sec Timing buffered disk reads: 72 MB in 3.05 seconds = 23.61 MB/sec bash-2.05b# hdparm -Ttv /dev/hdb /dev/hdb: multcount = 16 (on) IO_support = 1 (32-bit) unmaskirq = 1 (on) using_dma = 1 (on) keepsettings = 0 (off) readonly = 0 (off) readahead = 8 (on) geometry = 4865/255/63, sectors = 78165360, start = 0 Timing buffer-cache reads: 100 MB in 2.06 seconds = 48.54 MB/sec Timing buffered disk reads: 88 MB in 3.02 seconds = 29.14 MB/sec PID USER PR NI VIRT RES SHR S %CPU %MEM TIME+ COMMAND 704 root 18 0 1020 1020 820 R 26.2 0.1 0:09.94 top 503 root 9 0 15468 15m 13m S 3.8 1.5 2:23.76 kdeinit 566 root 9 0 14360 14m 12m S 3.1 1.4 0:35.08 kdeinit 507 root 10 0 11804 11m 10m S 2.9 1.2 0:37.31 kdeinit 355 root 5 -10 19948 11m 1788 S 2.7 1.1 2:30.65 XFree86 661 root 9 0 18872 18m 15m S 1.1 1.8 0:22.56 kmail 475 root 9 0 6176 6172 4720 S 0.7 0.6 0:24.50 artsd 1 root 9 0 492 492 440 S 0.2 0.0 0:05.36 init 117 root 9 0 0 0 0 S 0.2 0.0 0:01.35 kjournald 251 root 9 0 608 608 516 S 0.2 0.1 0:00.60 syslogd 462 root 9 0 11184 10m 10m S 0.2 1.1 0:08.46 kdeinit 2 root 9 0 0 0 0 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.06 keventd 3 root 19 19 0 0 0 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.11 ksoftirqd_CPU0 4 root 9 0 0 0 0 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.00 kswapd 5 root 9 0 0 0 0 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.00 bdflush 6 root 9 0 0 0 0 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.91 kupdated 7 root 9 0 0 0 0 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.09 pagebufd 8 root 9 0 0 0 0 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.00 xfslogd/0 9 root 9 0 0 0 0 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.00 xfsdatad/0 10 root -1 -20 0 0 0 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.00 mdrecoveryd 11 root 9 0 0 0 0 S 0.0 0.0 0:04.10 kjournald 79 root 9 0 0 0 0 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.00 khubd 86 root 9 0 0 0 0 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.27 kapmd 115 root 9 0 0 0 0 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.01 kjournald 116 root 9 0 0 0 0 S 0.0 0.0 0:01.21 kjournald 182 daemon 9 0 600 600 508 S 0.0 0.1 0:00.07 portmap 254 root 9 0 552 552 468 S 0.0 0.1 0:00.93 klogd 272 root 9 0 1488 1488 1148 S 0.0 0.1 0:01.78 cupsd 301 mail 8 0 1328 1324 1116 S 0.0 0.1 0:00.03 exim3 306 root 9 0 1704 1704 1120 S 0.0 0.2 0:05.13 famd 311 root 9 0 520 520 464 S 0.0 0.1 0:00.29 inetd 317 root 9 0 1092 1092 952 S 0.0 0.1 0:01.31 lisa 336 root 9 0 2144 2144 1356 S 0.0 0.2 0:01.67 nmbd 338 root 9 0 2508 2508 1632 S 0.0 0.2 0:00.04 smbd 344 root 9 0 1428 1428 1200 S 0.0 0.1 0:00.29 sshd 348 root 9 0 712 712 600 S 0.0 0.1 0:00.27 cron 353 root 9 0 696 696 624 S 0.0 0.1 0:00.05 kdm 356 root 8 0 1468 1468 1092 S 0.0 0.1 0:01.21 kdm 376 root 8 0 1960 1960 1168 S 0.0 0.2 0:37.03 bash 377 root 9 0 472 472 420 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.06 getty 378 root 9 0 472 472 420 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.06 getty -- Grüssle ¡CRP‚D€Dzf¢–Úy¸šžë®·ª¹ë-–+-±×›‰©è® "¶¬¹¸ÞrÚº{.nÇ+‰·“®‹›•à¨žÖœ¶X¬¶f¬µêåŠËluæâjz+
