Typical!  I'm sure I tried that yesterday, but anyway it mounts
manually perfectly OK now.  So all I'm missing is the automatic
mounting.

... and that's just in settings.  While I'm here what's the difference
between:-

    Mount removable drives when hot-plugged
and:-
    Mount removable media when inserted
