I'm not seeing an updated realtek firmware in backports: $ apt search realtek
apt policy firmware-realtek or at least apt list -a firmware-realtek
Anything else I can try?
You may search Ubuntu bug tracker or changelogs for patches related to realtek. Ubuntu kernel team builds vanilla kernels, so you may try to install it (to Ubuntu) to check if Ubuntu kernel has some patches or everything works there with upstream kernels.
Skim through "journalctl -b" output, maybe there are some errors or warnings that are not reported by dmesg.
