If your MUA doesn't have an explicit "reply to list" feature, then just
use "reply all", and remove everything except the list address from
the headers.

If you don't do a reply, then the In-Reply-To header which places your
message into the thread won't be set up, and your message will just
be a new thread with the same Subject as an existing one.  Some of the
archives may be clever enough to attempt thread joins via Subject header +
Date as well as the normal In-Reply-To header, but some may not.

If for some reason you ever NEED to construct a reply manually, what
you're doing is a good start.  You just need to copy the Message-Id
from the message to which you're replying, and add an In-Reply-To header:

    In-Reply-To: <messageid>

The <angle> <brackets> are literal here; you should add them.
