/etc/debian_version reports release active, but I need to know 32 or 64 bit.

uname -a

This tells you the *kernel* version. Note that for most architectures,
the 64 bit version can run 32 bit applications fine if you make sure to
have the libs installed.

So "the release 'is' 64 bit" or "... 32 bit" is misleading.

Yes BUT <grin>
I have hardware which is 64 bit but at different has been running both 32 and 64 bit Debian. I need to know which was active now.

Thanks
